Welcome to Kong Enterprise!

Onboarding 1: Install Kong Enterprise & Onboard your first API

Welcome to Kong!
We are really excited that you have chosen Kong, and we look forward to working with you!

This onboarding series is divided into 5 sections: Installing Kong, security, observability, dev portal & automation. If you have any questions,  reach out to our Support Team with your questions! If you don’t have an account, just ask your license holder to give you access.

In this section, we will be covering:

1. Install Kong Enterprise in 3 steps

Step 1: Decide which deployment mode you need (we recommend Hybrid mode)
Kong Gateway (on-prem) can be deployed in
3 different modes
  • Hybrid mode (Recommended)
  • Traditional / Classic mode
  • Kong Ingress Controller

As a Kong Enterprise customer, we recommend you deploy in Hybrid Mode. This involves separating the control plane and the data plane. The hybrid mode will make your Kong Platform:

  • More reliable
  • Easier to scale
  • Ensure you have access to Kong Manager (Kong UI) and can create a developer portal in the future
To find out more, check out our docs page on deployment modes

Step 2: Install Kong

Kong can be installed on many different systems. We recommend deploying Kong on Kubernetes using Helm, but you can also deploy on other systems (e.g. docker).

Docs Page: How to install Kong & Installation options

Check out our video tutorials here for installing Kong on Kubernetes, with Docker and installing Kong Ingress Controller (KIC):

Step 3: Download your license key and apply it to access Enterprise features

Your license key is what will give you access to key Kong Enterprise features. Your new license has been issued and posted to the
Customer Support Portal

Any of your team members with portal access can download it. Don’t have access to the portal? Ask your license holder to give you access.

Follow our docs page on How to apply your license.

2. Onboard your first APIs to Kong

Once you have deployed Kong, you can onboard your first API! Here is a Kong Academy module that will show you how:

You can log in to Kong Academy using your Customer Support Portal account, or by signing up for free on Kong Academy.

Technical questions?

As you install Kong, you may have some questions - you can submit a ticket to our Customer Reliability Engineering team in our Customer Support Portal.

If you have any technical questions, reach out to our Support Team with your questions! If you don’t have an account, just ask your license holder to give you access.

What’s next?

Check out the rest of our onboarding series - you will need to log in with your customer portal account to access these. If you don’t have an account, just ask your license holder to give you access
